A Greek orthodox Russian icon painting, St. Peter is depicted in tempera on wood panel with gold leaf detailing. This beautiful panel, dating from the early 19th century, depicts St. Peter, identifiable by his beard and balding head. St. Peter, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, is revered as the keeper of the keys and guardian of heaven. The large gilt halo is evidence of his holy nature, whilst he raises up the bible, and offers his left hand in a common gesture of blessing. St. Peter is richly dressed in red and blue robes, and illustrated wearing fine jewels and a detailed expression of serenity.
