Frances Atkins

My intention is to rupture the mediated storehouse of familiar imagery of Maori, in the hope new narratives might arise

Troi is a portrait of Atkin's 13 year old daughter. Here Troi is depicted performing a Karanga, or welcoming call. Troi encompasses an idealised image of hope, signalling a brighter future for a generation of Maori born into a more culturally nurturing and supportive environment. Calling a Karanga, Atkin's depicts a moment of empowerment.

On Troi's chin is a moko which becomes pixelated. Atkins bring the Moko into a digital form, alluding to the digitalisation culture.
