Paula Chan Cheuk Wedding-dress acquisition
In early 2015 FHE director Kathlene Fogarty assisted the British Museum of London Africa, Oceania and Americas department in acquiring a bark-cloth Paula Chan Cheuk wedding dress for the Oceania collection. Paula Chan Cheuk is a Samoan born designer who makes her clothing designs using the traditional materials of Pacific Island culture.
Kathlene worked closely with curator Natasha McKinny, acting as a local interlocutor with designer Chan Cheuk to facilitate valuation and shipment of the work.
Made of barkcloth, pearl-shell and coconut fibre the specially commissioned wedding dress is composed of traditional Pacific materials and is of stunning quality and design and is now on display at the Africa Oceania and Americas department of the British Museum in London.
