Humphrey Ikin

Column 1112 is part of an on-going exploration of relationships between gravity, structure, volume and space.

Ikin has been involved with columns and other sculpture (in conjunction with furniture) for more than 20 years - both constructed and carved.

His enduring interest in mathematics and measurement is manifested in Column 1112, both in its finished form and structural arrangement.

''There is certainly much precise measurement involved in having the compound-angled timber staves come together correctly.'' states Ikin. ''The strength of the individual assembled cones in combination with a minimal amount of internal steel gives strength to the whole''

Column 1112 is currently on display at FHE Galleries.
